School of Steelpan

The School of Steelpan is integral to the ongoing work of the organisation and comprises the following:

• Workshops, taster sessions and tuition in schools

• Weekly tuition for beginners, intermediate players and adults

• Professional development for steelpan tutors

• Accreditation including steelpan graded examinations

• Support for the Steelpan Educators and Tutors Association (SPETA)

SV2G School for SteelpanWe currently work in and with schools in Buckinghamshire.  Each week over 100 children and young people benefit from the two hour tuition sessions led by three professional Steelpan Tutors provided.

Weekly tuition also takes place with the School of Steelpan on Saturdays for children from the age of 5 years upwards and adults at our own premises: Central Park, Lily’s Walk, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

We now also offer one-to-one tuition, for almost all ages for those interested. These will also run on Saturdays but will remain separate to ensure the student gets the most out of the tuition without distractions. Click here for more info.

We tutor all of our registered members in playing the steel pan instrument correctly through the use of techniques and working through sets of repertoires, and we offer music tuition in theory. Once fluent on the instrument, each member will then get a chance to join Wycombe Steel Orchestra, our performance group. For further information, please contact us at schoolofsteelpan@sv2g.org.uk

In 2008 SV2G delivered a Steelpan in Education project supported by Arts Council England South East. Four SV2G tutors were able to experience intensive training on the steelpan syllabus from the University of West Indies (UWI) in Trinidad and Tobago and also attended workshops at Pamberi Steel Orchestra pan theatre (pan yard) in Trinidad. The link with UWI continues, allowing ongoing professional development for SV2G tutors and  for Wycombe Steel Orchestra members to pass graded steelpan examinations.
